The warm-up increases the body’s internal temperature and the heart rate so that more oxygen-rich blood can be pumped through the muscles. The chance of getting injured decreases when the heart, muscles, ligaments, and tendons are properly prepared for exertion and, vica versa the risk of injury increases unnecessarily when you do not go through a proper warm-up.
A warm-up should include some running-in-place or slow jogging, stretching, and calisthenics. Get all the major muscle groups involved in the warm-up and pay particular attention to warming-up the parts of the body that will become subject to the most stress during the conditioning activity.
After stretching all his major muscle groups, a major-league pitcher warms-up by throwing baseballs at increasing velocity. The last couple pitches are at game speed. Warming-up from the general to the specific like major league pitchers is a good model to adapt and follow.

You should cool down properly after each exercise period, regardless of the type of workout. Even swimming needs a cool down. The cool down serves to gradually slow the heart rate and helps prevent pooling of the blood in the legs and feet.
During exercise, the muscles squeeze the blood through the veins. This helps return the blood to the heart. After exercise, however, the muscles relax and no longer do this, and the blood can accumulate in the legs and feet. This can cause a person to faint. A good cool-down will help avoid this possibility.
During the warm-up you specifically engaged the muscle groups that you would be using during the conditioning activity. You do not have to engage the same muscle groups again for the cool down. For a proper cool down you can walk and stretch until your heart rate returns to less than 100 beats per minute (BPM) and heavy sweating stops. This usually happens five to seven minutes after the end of the conditioning activity.
You can check your BPM on the radial artery on your wrist (just above the base of the thumb), a carotid artery on your neck (just beside the Adam’s apple), or by putting your hand over your heart. Count the beats for 10 seconds and multiple by 6 to get BPM.

While idebenone has been known for a long time as a pharmaceutical agent, it has arrived to the realm of skin care only recently. In fact, some skin care companies claim it as a new, cutting-edge discovery. But, can it really benefit your skin?
In the 1970s and 1980s, researchers had been studying the potential of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), including its ability to improve heart failure, reduce free radical damage and slow down certain neurological conditions. CoQ10, a vitamin-like natural compound found in all aerobic organisms, plays an important role in cellular energy production and is also an effective antioxidant. Trying to boost CoQ10′s therapeutic effects, scientists synthesized and tested a variety of its chemical analogs and derivatives. Most of these derivatives were found ineffective or unsafe. However, one of the few exceptions was idebenone.
It is closely related to CoQ10 in its structure. However, idebnone is more effective than CoQ10 in protecting cells from the free radical damage resulting from reduced blood flow.
What does all this have to do with skin care? Recently CoQ10 has been shown to improve skin wrinkles. Not surprisingly, some skin care companies decided that CoQ10 analogs might do a similar or better job. So, they found out that idebenone was also a good anti-wrinkle remedy.
It’s important to realize that free radicals that form in the skin in response to the sun’s ultraviolet rays are largely responsible for wrinkling and other signs of aging. To fight these damaging molecules, cosmetic chemists developed this topical antioxidant that’s even more powerful than natural antioxidants such as vitamins C and E.
Results of a clinical trial were presented in February 2004 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. They wanted to find out which ingredient offered the best protection against free radicals. Well, it was idebenone that finished first against vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, kinetin, and alpha-lipoic acid.
The benefits of this ingredient include shielding skin from environmental damage, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and reducing dryness and smoothing skin texture.
Antioxidants help protect against the damage caused by free radicals in the environment. Free radicals are unstable compounds that occur naturally in the body and try to stabilize by attaching to the nearest normal cell. This results in a chain-reaction because once the free radical attaches to a healthy cell, it too becomes a free radical in search of stabilization causing cellular damage. Antioxidants, such as idebenone and others, stop this process by donating a molecule to the free radical making it stable.
But, you should know that although idebenone is thought of as a wrinkle reducer, it is more of a skin protector. It is a true antiaging phenomena because it blocks the causes of aging and treats its effects. For best results, use it in addition to a broad spectrum sunblock.

Our feet carry us many miles on a daily basis and they deserve special treatment after a long day. The following are a few basic tips to get your feet ready for year-round exposure and not just for spring or summer sandals.
1) Blisters, corns and bunions, Oh My! Those pointy toe shoes are cute and in-style but your feet suffer greatly. A lot of foot ailments are due to neglect and abuse. According to the APMA all three foot ailments can be helped or prevented by wearing the proper foot wear, which is what my grandmother would tell me over and over again…needless to say, I didn’t listen. The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) suggest using over the counter creams (avoiding acid preparations) and exfoliating products on corns. Blister shouldn’t be broken, but if broken wash with soap and water; apply an anitseptic ointment and cover to prevent infection. Bunions can be helped by wearing shoes that have a wide toe box and consulting your podiatrist. If you suffer from diabetes consult your medical doctor or podiatrist to determine the best way to care for your feet.
2) Make sure your feet stay clean by washing and drying between your toes and making sure you dry them well to prevent bacteria and fungi from forming, which thrives in moist areas. Always give your shoes time to air out and dry between wearings and using a little foot powder can help to keep your feet dry.
3) If you have athlete’s foot or any other fungal conditions, Dr. Scholls Foot Center suggest that you DO NOT REUSE your towel during treatmeant as bacteria can lay dormant for up to 4 weeks. 5) Use exfoliating products to prevent or remove hard skin from your feet. There are various types of foot exfoliating treatments, pumice stones and files on the market to choose from. while you’re in the bath tub scrub your feet and heels with your favorite body scrub to keep them soft and smooth.
6) Take your own personal pedicure tools as some lower scale salons use the same tools on everyone. For your in-home pedicure, make sure you wash your tools with an antibacterial soap to get rid of any bacteria that may form before using again.
7) Sometimes polish will crack or peel before the next pedicure and you can remedy that by using your own polish so you can touch up a toe or two in between visits. I started using my own polish because the polish rubs off my baby toe when I wear closed in shoes and touching up one toe is easier than taking the polish off and repainting all ten when changing into open shoes.
8) If you have very dry skin use an ultra moisturizing lotion or cream on your feet. Apply after a bath or shower and then place socks on your feet, which will make them extra smooth and moisturized in the morning and ready for those open toe sandals.
9) When wearing open sandals, flip-flops or going barefoot at the beach, use sunscreen on the top of your feet. Don’t forget to reapply after coming out of the water.
10) Treat your feet to a massage, in-home or at a professional salon. Our feet carry us many miles on a daily basis and deserve special treatment.
